to Mendocino Wine Country
Mendocino County is located about 100 miles north of San Francisco and is home to 54 wineries within 15,500 acres of rolling hills and vineyards. The county is noted for its distinct Pacific Ocean coastline, Redwood forests and wine production. The Mendocino County wine region has two distinctive climate zones separated by the Mendocino Range. There are 9 AVAs (American Viticultural Area) and they are Mendocino, Anderson Valley, McDowell Valley, Potter Valley, Cole Ranch, Redwood Valley, Yorkville Highlands, Ukiah Valley, Sanel Valley and Mendocino Ridge.
The most unique wine growing region within this remote wine county is Anderson Valley. This valley has a wine trail that runs along Highway 128 where Navarro River and its tributaries meet and divide Navarro into two banks. The northwest end of Anderson Valley is cooler as fog and breeze that roll over from the coastline, making it an ideal climate for growing grapes to produce Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The southeast end of Anderson Valley is warmer and more ideal for growing grapes to be made into Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel. Within Anderson Valley, you can find the charming towns of Yorkville, Boonville, Philo and Navarro. Along this wine trail, which spans 18 miles, wine lovers and visitors alike can stop to sit on sip their favorite wines and champagnes. Fall in love with the serene and tranquil beauty of this gem of a wine region, home to the some of the best red and white wines in the country. For organic and biodynamic wine lovers, Mendocino produces more organic grapes than any other wine region in the United States. The cool coastal breeze makes this terrior an ideal location to grow grapes.
