History and Geography of Lake County :Lake County Wine Country was formed in 1861 from parts of Napa and Mendocino counties. Lake County has been transformed from an Agricultural Valley into a Wine growing region in late 1870s. After the 1920 Prohibition , Lake County went from less than 95 acres of vineyards to over 9,000 acres of vineyards.
Due to the increasing Wine Growing Regions in Lake County today, the area has been divided into several American Viticultural Areas including : Clear Lake, Benmore Valley, Guenoc Valley, Red Hills Lake County, High Valley.
Geographically, Lake County is located about 115 miles from San Francisco. Lake Country is surrounded by Napa Valley in the South, Colusa County in the East, Glenn County in Northeast, Mendocino County and Sonoma County in Southwest.
